Add "Typing..." Indicator in Zoom Chat

Hello Zoom Team,

I am writing to request an enhancement to Zoom’s chat functionality that I believe will significantly improve real-time communication during meetings. Currently, when participants type messages in the chat, there is no visual indication that a message is being composed. This often leads to delays in conversation flow, with participants waiting unnecessarily or sending duplicate messages.

I propose implementing a “typing…” indicator in the chat window with the following considerations:

  • Context-Aware Visibility: The indicator should only appear when the chat window is open. This approach ensures that users who are not actively engaged with the chat are not distracted.
  • Improved User Experience: For interactive sessions—whether during educational classes, interviews, or business meetings—a visible indicator will help participants know when someone is in the process of sending a message. This proactive feedback can make interactions feel smoother and more natural.
  • Enhanced Communication Dynamics: Implementing such a feature would reduce the waiting time during active discussions and help maintain the conversational rhythm, particularly in environments where timely responses are essential.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I believe that adding a “typing…” animation will enhance the overall user experience in Zoom meetings, leading to more effective and engaging conversations. I would be happy to provide further insights or participate in additional discussions regarding this enhancement.

Best regards,

hi @Sarath_Kumar
Thank you for your suggestion.
This feature does exist in group chat.

In larger groups I can see it being more distracting than helpful

Thanks for your suggestion

John

Hi John!
I understand that it might be distracting. In order to reduce the distraction, we can enable the typing animation only when the chat box is open.

In the main zoom meeting, it might be distracting if the typing animation is shown.

Imagine this scenario, most of the times, students keep themselves muted, as a tutor, we expect answers for a question in the chat. But we end up waiting more time than required, because we are nit sure if someone is writing answer to the question.

May one another alternative solution could be give the host an option either to disable or enable the texting animation during the meeting.

I really wanted to contribute to the code base and raise a pull request. But I am not sure if this is possible.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Thank you for your valuable time.
Best,
Sarath
