Currently, the profile picture next to the name of a person is simply the availability status indicator of that person. When I hover over the name, I see the profile picture with a little availability indicator in the corner.
Could this be the default view? It is so much faster finding the person you want to contact when you can see their profile picture instead of hovering over all of them or reading their names.
