I work in an open office where I am often on the same calls with people sitting within a few feet of me. I would like a feature that lets me mute select participants, so I do not have to hear them twice, since I can already hear them live.

That is an interesting use case. But the audio is sent down from Zoom as a collective response, and therefore I think it would take a lot of engineering ot make this happen, so I think it is unlikely to be done in the near future.
